Living in the shadow of cancer
Blog post April 29 2026 Alison Barrera
Cancer has quietly shaped so much of my life. I lost my grandparents to it. I watched it take pieces of
people I loved, slowly and unfairly. And now, I’m walking alongside my mom through it — a different
role, but somehow even heavier. There’s something about watching a parent go through it that shifts
everything. You’re no longer just the child... you’re the support system, the strength, the one trying to
hold it all together. When you hear the words “they have cancer,” time doesn’t stop — but it definitely
changes. The air feels different. Conversations feel more fragile. Even normal days carry a weight they
didn’t have before. You start measuring moments differently — appreciating the small things, but also
fearing what might come next. I’ll be honest — this is part of why I tend to avoid doctors. Not out of
ignorance, but out of experience. I’ve seen how quickly life can change inside those rooms. For me,
there’s a level of peace in focusing on how I live instead — staying present, taking care of my body,
managing stress, and choosing a mindset rooted in hope instead of fear. I believe in positive thinking —
not in a naive way, but in a protective way. The kind that helps you get through hard days. The kind that
reminds you that even in the middle of something heavy, there can still be laughter, connection, and
love. Because if cancer has taught me anything, it’s this: We don’t always get to choose what
happens... but we do get to choose how we show up for it. And I choose to show up with love, strength,
and as much light as I can
